About Dr. Maham Iqbal
Dr. Maham Iqbal is a consultant psychiatrist in Lahore who specialises in the mental health of both adults and young people. With more than six years of clinical experience and specialised training in child and adolescent psychiatry, she helps patients and families understand what they are going through and find a clear, practical path towards recovery.
Background
Dr. Maham Iqbal earned her MBBS from Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore, in 2018, and completed her MD in Psychiatry (RC) at the University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lahore, in 2025. She went on to complete specialised training in Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMH-C) at Baqai Medical University, Karachi, in 2026. This combination of general and specialist psychiatric training allows her to care for patients at every stage of life, from early childhood to adulthood.
She is currently associated with Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore, and sees patients by appointment at Gynemed Hospital, Lahore. Her hospital-based practice has given her broad clinical experience across the full spectrum of psychiatric conditions, from first episodes of anxiety and depression to complex and long-standing mental illness.
Dr. Iqbal is committed to continuous professional development. In 2024, she completed the Child Abuse and Neglect Management Workshop conducted by PAHCHAAN in collaboration with UNICEF, receiving training in the early detection, medical management, reporting and referral of child abuse and neglect. This training strengthens her work with children and families, ensuring that young patients receive care that is both clinically sound and protective of their safety and wellbeing.
She has also completed formal training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Positively Happy Organization, Lahore. CBT is one of the most effective, evidence-based psychological treatments for anxiety, depression and related conditions, and it allows Dr. Iqbal to combine psychotherapy with medical treatment, offering patients more than medication alone.
Most people who come to see a psychiatrist have been struggling quietly for a long time. My first priority is to make them feel heard, without judgement and without rushing. When patients understand what is happening to them, and know that their family understands it too, recovery becomes far more possible.
Care
Every first consultation with Dr. Maham is thorough and unhurried. Patients are given time to explain their concerns fully, and families are welcome to take part where appropriate. Diagnoses and treatment options are explained in clear, simple language, so that patients can make informed decisions together with their doctor.
Treatment is tailored to each individual and often combines psychotherapy, practical coping strategies and lifestyle guidance. Medication is prescribed only when it offers real benefit, starting at the lowest effective dose and reviewed regularly for both progress and side effects. Follow-up appointments ensure that treatment stays on track and is adjusted as the patient improves.
Confidentiality is central to her practice. Everything shared during a consultation remains private and is not disclosed without the patient's consent, except in rare situations where someone's safety is at serious risk or the law requires it.
Unhurried first visits, with family involved where appropriate.
Therapy, coping skills and medicine only when it helps.
Regular review, with confidentiality at the centre.
Who she helps
Dr. Iqbal's training in child and adolescent mental health is a key part of her practice. Young people often show distress through changes in behaviour, sleep, appetite or school performance rather than in words, and these signs are easily misunderstood at home and at school.
She assesses and supports children and teenagers with concerns such as anxiety, low mood, attention and behavioural difficulties, developmental conditions and exam-related stress. Parents are closely involved at every stage and receive practical guidance on supporting their child at home.
Alongside child and adolescent care, Dr. Iqbal treats adults with a wide range of conditions, including:
Mental health conditions affect the whole household. Dr. Iqbal makes a point of guiding families on how to understand the condition, respond calmly to difficult moments and support their loved one's recovery, an approach that is especially valuable in addiction, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and childhood conditions.
